Parenting can be one of the most enjoyable experiences and yet it can be equally frustrating. Both parents undergo a transformation in their identity during the years of raising their kids.
Although caring is a critically important function for families, focusing only on caring does not capture the reciprocal, contingent nature of parent–child relationship.
The substance of parent–child relationships consists of how one assists the other:
· How are interactions between generations in our families?
· Is support from parents and children in times of need forthcoming?
· Is assistance effective?
· What factors decide the amount and the kinds of help rendered?
The types of behaviors and emotions parents display during interactions with their children are linked with child behavior. Parental rejection or hostility (e.g., harsh discipline, dictatorial parenting) leads to aggressiveness in children.
Adopting a right mix of two important qualities – Caring & loving and Disciplined & firm leads to effective parenting.
